How to Shop for Furniture Under $500
- Spend more where you sit and sleep. Put most of the budget into the sofa, mattress and bed frame, and save on shelves, side tables and storage.
- Measure first. Check the room, doorways and stairs before you order. Returns on big items can cost a lot.
- Read the newest reviews. Budget furniture can change between production runs, so recent reviews matter more than the overall star rating.
- Check assembly and materials. Particleboard and fabric drawers keep prices low; look for metal frames or solid wood where strength matters.
- Time your purchase. Prices often drop around Black Friday and Cyber Monday. See our Black Friday furniture deals and best time to buy furniture guides.
Most furniture under $500 is flat-packed, so plan time for assembly. Furnishing just the living room? Our living room sets under $500 guide covers matching sofa sets. For even smaller budgets, see the best furniture under $200.
For safety, anchor dressers and tall shelves to the wall. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign explains how.
